An analysis by the Platform for Electromobility confirms that there are already more than enough electric charging points across the EU.
At the moment there’s an average of six electric cars for each public charging point, across the EU. This is nearly double the 10 cars per charging point recommended by the European commission.
In terms of distance, the Energy Saving Trust has found that in England the average driver is four miles from a charging point, in Scotland it’s three miles and in Wales it’s 12 miles. London is the UK city with the most frequent amount of charging points, with one every tenth of a mile in some boroughs.
The charging infrastructure is predicted to keep growing in line with the number of electric cars on the road until at least 2020. In addition, by 2020 one fast charger is expected for every 40km of highway, which is ahead of the one per 65km that Brussels wants by 2025.
The comparison of fully electric vehicle models launched by car manufactures to the number of charging points on the road, is small. According to the European Federation for Transport and Environment there are only 20 battery electric vehicles on sale in Europe, while there are 417 conventional petrol and diesel vehicles on the market.
